Benefits of Animal-Assisted Therapy

Mental Health

Animal-Assisted Therapy enhances mental well-being by encouraging the release of serotonin, prolactin, and oxytocin when interacting with animals. This leads to a state of relaxation and triggers the body’s stress-reducing response, which can significantly alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety, and sadness.

Physical Health

Beyond mental health benefits, Animal-Assisted Therapy also supports physical well-being. It can accelerate healing and mitigate the effects of various health conditions. For instance, a 2007 study found that therapy dogs improved cardiovascular health in heart patients by lowering blood pressure and reducing stress hormone levels.

Skills Improvement

Animal-Assisted Therapy can enhance other therapeutic practices, as individuals often feel more motivated to engage after interacting with animals. The presence of an animal can foster spontaneous communication, particularly in situations where a child might otherwise be hesitant to express themselves.
